Cozy Dens

Cosy Dens (Pelíšky), directed by Jan Hřebejk and based on stories by Petr Šabach, is a bittersweet Czech tragicomedy set in a Prague apartment block during the Christmas of 1967, just months before the Prague Spring. The film follows two neighboring families whose fathers live in completely opposite worlds: one a proud communist officer, the other a staunch anti‑communist patriot. While the parents clash over ideology, their children navigate first loves, Western pop culture, and dreams of a freer life.

Beloved for its sharp humor, iconic quotes, and tender nostalgia, Cosy Dens captures the essence of everyday Czech life—from carp in the bathtub to absurd socialist gadgets—while subtly reflecting the looming historical upheaval. Balancing comedy with poignant moments, it paints a vivid portrait of a society on the brink of change.
