Synopsis

The Diary of a Modern Dad, the first feature film by Jan Haluza (b. 1987), who is also the author of the screenplay. It is an adaptation of the popular work of the same name by Dominik Landsman, which was first published as a blog and later also published as a book. – The film, just like its literary counterpart, tells in ich-form about the sorrows of a new father. This is what Dominik became a journalist by accident, after one night spent with the toy designer Nataša. A couple who had no plans for a future together must deal with an unexpected situation where the pregnant young woman has nowhere to live and the man has nothing to pay alimony. So they make a deal. Nataša moves in with Dominik, who postpones her planned study stay in the UK by a year and stays on parental leave, while the designer returns to her well-paid job after six months of pregnancy. At the end of the one-year term, they plan to break up and continue to live independently. The young father's naive ideas about a peaceful "vacation", during which he will have time to write the desired novel, will soon take over, and Dominik will have months of stereotypical care for his sleepless son, to whom he must give his full attention. Over time, he gets used to the new role, develops a relationship with the child as well as with his mother, and together they function as a real family, which has nothing to do with their original, rational agreement. The time spent with his son also inspires the man to write a successful blog. – The skillfully filmed debut has a somewhat predictable plot, but it contains authentic and funny moments based on glosses and exuberant imaginations of the hero as well as well-timed gags with a number of references mainly to American films of the 80s. Thanks to dynamic camerawork, editing and a strong musical component, a visually and directorially imaginative film was created, which relies not only on the excellent performances of the central pair, Jiří Mádl and Tereza Ramba, but also on other prominent actors in supporting roles (Ondřej Malý, Pavla Tomicová and others ). The taxi driver episode was played by Dominik Landsman, the author of the literary work himself.
