Noise Agents Conference

The First Noise Agents Conference marks a significant milestone in the history of the Noise Agency. For the first time, this agency is holding an open conference where the general public—as well as all independent agents—can meet, observe, and learn something new from one another. As part of the conference, we will launch an anthology of works centered on the idea and practice of the page, some of which will be performed during the event. The Czech artist Lucie Páchová will also participate in the conference.

For the agent, the page is first and foremost the material presence of sound in the world; every noise is an expression of an echo detached from its source and resonating back into the environment it encounters. This presence also creates for the agent a trace—a form of inscription—and a possibility for tracking the actions of sounds in the world. Even in silence, the agent can study the presence of sounds from the near and distant past. For her, the echo is also an expression of recording.

Because of these relationships formed between noises and the world—interference, recomposition, and even destruction or breaking—the agent comes to understand the echo as a source of resistance as well. The sounds, as well as the actions she performs as an agent, join a system of forces and movements; in fact, they generate and are generated almost simultaneously, or in ways that cannot be disentangled. Resistance is neither final nor absolute; it does not produce one definitive outcome or another, but rather expresses the disposition of the noise agent in her operation within the world.
