The Haifa International Film Festival took place from October 7 to 18. This year's 38th edition hosted two Czech movies, The Word by director Beata Parkanová and the animated film Even Mice Belong in Heaven by directors Denisa Grimmová and Jan Bubeníček.
The Haifa International Film Festival takes place every year in the fall, always during the week-long Jewish holiday of Sukkot. The festival, whose first year took place in 1983, was the first of its kind in Israel. Over the years, it has become one of the country's major film events.
At the festival, two films represented the Czech Republic. The first of them was The Word by director and screenwriter Beata Parkanová. The period drama follows the story of the married couple Václav and Věra in 1968 and 1969 and the political pressure they face as a family. Martin Finger and Gabriela Mikulková played the main roles, the script was written by the director herself. The film premiered as part of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2022. Beata Parkanová herself participated the Haifa International Film Festival and introduced her movie.
The second film was the animated film Even Mice Belong in Heaven. The film presents the story of Mouse and Fox, who meet in heaven after an unfortunate event and become best friends. Together they return to earth, where they are born in reversed roles.
