The 38nd edition of the International Film Festival in Haifa will host two Czech films this year. The festival will present the film drama The Word by director Beata Parkanová and the animation movie Even Mice Belong in Heaven directed by Denisa Grimmová and Jan Bubeníček
The Word
Václav is mild-mannered notary public who settles disputes with a calm appeal to reason. The qualities have made him a respected figure in the small Czech town where he lives with his loyal wife Vera and their two young children - but also a prime target of the Communist Party, who pressures him to join the ranks. Václav continues to refuse but the year is 1968 and Soviet tanks are already roaming the streets.
Winner of the Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 2022 Karlovy Vary Festival, The Word is an original and intimate character study with exquisite performances from Martin Finger and Gabriela Mikulková.

Even Mice Belong in Heaven
A film about two mortal enemies - a little mouse Whizzy and Whitebelly the fox, who after an unfortunate accident, meet in animal heaven. They lose their natural instincts and become best friends. Their wish to stay together after they return to earth comes true, but they are reborn into opposite roles. Thanks to the power of friendship they can even overcome what seems to be impossible. The film Even Mice Belong in Heaven is about hope, a quest for love and courage, and about overcoming prejudices and old pains. The story reveals that everything that seems to be at an end is the beginning of something else, and what appears to be invincible can be surmounted.
